Saturday and the sun is shining!

I awoke to the most wonderful sunrise over the Apeninnes and the sun has contiued to shine over Bellaugello Gay bed and breakfast in Umbria.

Hardly a cloud in the sky, the ground should start to dry after yesterday’s wet weather. Spring is in the air!

Gubbio – Piazza Grande 28/08/2009

A friend who had stayed at Bellaugello Gay B&B recently sent me this You Tube link of the fabulous concert and lighting show held in the Piazza Grande in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli.  It brought back memories of halcyon summer days……   To view Click on the Link below

Palazzo dei Consoli, Gubbio Music and Light 2009

An example of one of the many wonderful concerts and events that cater to a wide range of tastes here in the beautiful medieval city of Gubbio, Umbria, held every year.

Rubber Gloves

We live in an age of increasing planned obsolescence and by contrast eco-awareness.

Why do household rubber gloves disintegrate or puncture after such a short time?  In my memory a pair of rubber gloves would last for simply ages, you could use them for doingthe washing up and then when they were a bit tired transfer them to cleaning bathroom and floor duties, and still they remained intact.

Now after mere days rubber gloves puncture and let in water, I am sick of them.  I have tried all brands sold in Gubbio and yet to find a reliable pair that lasts more than a week.  Show them a knife and they wilt!  We have eco-awareness drummed into us these days, why can’t the same standards be applied to glove manufacturers?

The Gremlins are back

I have spent the past weeks attempting to link my website for Bellaugello Gay Bed and Breakfast in Umbria to other sites.  It is a dazzlingly difficult task for a novice like me.  Once I find a site I like I either fill in an online form, or send a request.

The online form inevitably requires photographs loaded and thus time to upload, haha! with ADSLento here it is unpredictable.  Sometimes the form goes sometimes it does not, but you have to keep coming back and checking, it consumes time, lots of time.

Some sites now have me listed, others do not, so I email them, and guess what…. no reply no replies.  Now do I blame that on my ADSLento or have I filled in the form incorrectly, or has the site gone on holiday or is TelecomItalia still sending my emails by fax?  I guess I’ll never know :)

Uganda prepares to pass a bill that may execute LGBT Ugandans

I recently received a request to sign a petition.  I was most distressed to learn that Uganda’s government is attempting to pass a law that may execute or imprison anyone who works to prevent HIV infection among LGBT Ugandans, who favours tolerance, or fails to report gay or transgendered people tothe authorities.

The petition is hosted by Avaaz.org and reads  “We stand with citizens across Uganda who arecalling on their government to withdraw the Anti-Homosexual Bill, and to protect the universal human rights embodied in the Ugandan constitution.  We urge Uganda’s leaders and donors to join us in rejecting persecution and upholding values of justice and tolerance

Please follow the link and join me and many others by signing the petition Avaaz.org Petition

Rosa

Rosa died on saturday.  She was 86 and a long time resident of Valdichiascio.  For many years a widow she kept her farm going with the help of friends and neighbours, and was often seen on the roadside crossing btween house and barn, always ready to chat with her friends of which there were many.

Incredibly well loved in the valley one close neighbour said to me today at the funeral “not only have I lost a neighbour but also a good friend and teacher”.  Rosa will be missed, the house looks sad, and we now need a new teacher of the old way of doing things and I know just the person!

Yummy Soda Bread

While ranting in my last post the bread was cooking, depsite finding the road in the garden, and several broken tree limbs, this morning I made soda bread.

This is a traditional bread recipe of  Irish and Scottish origin made without yeast, and utterly delicious.  Here at Bellaugello gay bed and breakfast in my recipe I use organic wholemeal flour and specially imported Scottish oatmeal.

Smothered in butter and the home-made Bellaugello marmalade it is a delicious breakfast.
